Look at the image below showing Rank Checker.
![]() |
Rank Checker checks a website's rankings on Google, either google.com, the default, or google.co.uk. It checks up to 500 results (I could have made it check up to 1,000 but what would be the point? I mean, if your website ranks over 500 then perhaps you need to scrap it altogether and start again?). Rank Checker is divided into three main areas, from left to right. The area on the left is the keyword area; the area in the centre collects the actual Google URLs to check; and the area on the right is where the results/reports are displayed. |
Keywords
|
|
Keywords can be added in three different ways. They can be added via Overture. Enter a keyword in the input box as shown left ('cheap loans') and hit the 'Enter' button on your keyboard. Then wait a few seconds. If all goes well, the listbox below should fill with 100 results, each preceded with the number of searches carried out for the previous month on Overture. Now, Overture usually returns the singular keyword ('cheap loan', 'cheap personal loan', 'cheap car loan'...etc). But most users input the plural into a search engine ('cheap loans', 'cheap personal loans', 'cheap car loans'...etc). To add the plural version of each singular keyword, input the singular word you want to make plural in the Make plural textbox. For example, to add the plural of 'cheap loan' to the list, put the word loan (singular) into the Make plural text box. Rank Checker will go through the list of keywords and if it finds 'loan' anywhere in the keyword, it will make a plural version and add it to the list. |
|
So, as well as 'cheap loan', 'cheap personal loan', 'cheap car loan'...etc, after clicking the Go button, the list will then contain 'cheap loans', 'cheap personal loans', 'cheap car loans'...etc. Easy! Of course, there's no need to use Overture. You can simply input a keyword and then hit the Add button. The keyword will be added to the listbox. Then add another, and another... Obviously, there will be no search number preceding the keyword in the listbox. Instead, you'll see ' - cheap loan', ' - cheap personal loan' ...etc. There's yet a third way to add keywords to the list. Use Google itself. Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and save the results as a text file. Then open up in Notepad, highlight the list and right-click to copy to the clipboard, and then click on Keywords in Rank Checker's menu. Select the Load From Clipboard option. The Google list of keywords will be added to the keyword listbox. As well as the Load From Clipboard option, other Keywords menu options include Open Keywords, Save Keywords and Clear Keywords. |

URLs
![]() |
You've loaded a list of keywords into Rank Checker and now you're ready to find if your website ranks for any of them. Rank Checker queries google.com, the default. Check the Google UK checkbox to query google.co.uk. Choose how many results you want to check - 100 up to 500 - by clicking the Number of results to check dropdown box. Then enter the FULL url you are targeting (include the 'http://'). Click the Find button and watch as Rank Checker fills the list with 100 urls at a time, and then checks each one against the url entered. You can stop the process any time by clicking Stop on the menu. |
Please note: Rank Checker uses a random delay of between five and 15 seconds between each Google query. That way, Google's servers are not 'hammered' (as is often the case with some software programs) and YOU won't get into trouble, either!
Reports
![]() |
This is the exciting bit, seeing how many of your target keywords rank (if any) for the target url! The Current search report is the current ranking search being carried out. Notice how the url, date and search engine being queried are automatically added to the report? Then if the target url is found for a particular keyword, it is added to the report, with the position found. In the example, the url http://www.dm-loans.co.uk ranks at 91 for the keyword 'cheap loan'....and so on. Simple! Rank Checker will automatically go through the list of keywords loaded, checking up to 500 results on Google for each one. When finished, save the report as something meaningful, e.g. dm-loans 30July07. That way, you can reload a report for a particular url on a particular date. In fact, load the saved report in the box underneath, which is handy for comparison purposes. Simply go to the main menu and click on Reports, then Open Report To Compare. Load a previously saved report, perhaps from the previous day, or week, or month. And finally, notice the Add to clipboard button above the Current search area? Click it and it'll add the current report, or a current report plus a comparison report (if loaded) to the clipboard. Then paste into your email client, text editor... Great for keeping clients informed of changes in the ranking of their website! |
